Camp Bowie 36th Division Memorial Park

There’s more to explore here at the park, which was the “home to the largest military training center in Texas, Camp Bowie,” during During World War II, said Tour Texas. “Although the camp closed soon after the war ended, it still left an indelible mark on the town that can be seen to this day. The impact, and the service of those who trained at the base, is commemorated at the Camp Bowie 36th Division Memorial Park, located across the street from the Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Tour the 8.71-acre park today and you’ll encounter a variety of military equipment and vehicles used during World War II and beyond, including tanks and artillery pieces.”

Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center

At King’s Pint Cove, owners can enjoy the resort pool in addition to a wide array of lake activities. Should you ever want to get outside the community, however, you’ll love taking the kids down the waterslide or for a float at the Camp Bowie Family Aquatic Center. “Open during the summer, the center offers a bit of something for swimmers of all ages,” said Tour Texas. “Let the youngsters play on the themed tot slide or under the raindrops while you kick back and relax on the zero entry beach. If you’re looking for some exercise, swim until you’re breathless in the four-lane lap pool.”

Fabis Primitive Park

This undeveloped 22-acre park is another fishing spot in town. Make note of the fact that you’ll need to go through the Pecan Bayou to find a place to drop a line. You can also use their public boat ramp.

Historic Downtown Brownwood

“A variety of boutique shops, one-of-a-kind restaurants, and concert venues reside in Historic Downtown Brownwood, the epicenter of leisure and culture in the city,” said Tour Texas. “Catch a drama or a musical at Brownwood’s Lyric Theatre, indulge in some retail therapy, and stroll the courthouse square.”

Lake Brownwood State Park

This is a great place for a family hike, with three miles of trails. Head out in the spring to take in the wide variety of wildflowers. You may also wildlife such as white-tailed deer and tons of birds. You can also fish, swim, and boat here.

Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum

If your little ones love trains, this is bound to become one of their favorite spots. “Marvel at a variety of railroad equipment and memorabilia, photographs, and stories of how the early railroad changed Brownwood and life in America,” they said. “Located across the street from the Santa Fe Depot and Fred Harvey House, the museum features a mini-train that both adults and children can ride, as well as a children’s play area. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday (except holidays) throughout the year.”

Riverside Park

Right on the Pecan Bayou, this park also offers a disc golf course, in addition to hiking trails, a boat ramp, and opportunities for boating, swimming, and fishing.

The Gordon Wood Hall of Champions Museum

Brownwood has a history of strong athletic performances, and Gordon Wood is among its most beloved heroes. This “Texas sports legend and the winningest high school football coach in the Lone Star State who led the Brownwood Lions to 17 district or co-district championships and seven state titles: is commemorated in this museum, where you can browse his memorabilia, playbooks, and videos.

Golf

Get out there with the kids for some fun on the greens, and you just might raise a future legend on this challenging course.
